This is an article that takes a close look at Monet’s painting La Point de la Heve at How Tide.

The painting, La Point de la Heve at Low Tide, was painted during the 19th century by Monet. In the painting there is a sort of hill type cliff on the right side, with water washing up against the rocks. The water is painted using colours such as white, and different shades of grey, which make the mass of water appear cold and uninviting. Also, the white which is used to create the affect of waves makes the water appear as

though it would during a storm. The sky is also painted, as is the water, with different shades of grey, making it appear dull and lacklustre. The sky is full of clouds, and goes well with the water, since they both appear to be part of a scene from a storm.

The water is painted with curved lines, which add to the wave affect. The cliffs are painted with diagonal lines, which are used to create s slop. The sky is very unique and the lines used are curved and squiggly. The main colours in the painting are dark colours, such as browns and grays, with the exception of white, which is not a dark colour, however it is mainly used for creating different shades of the colours used.

When first looking at the painting, you are drawn to the right-hand side of the painting, which is the first thing you

see when looking at the painting. Because its the darkest thing in the painting, and is also relatively large in size, it stands out more than anything else in the painting.

The painting seems as though you can see for miles. The shore appears miles long, as though one could walk along it, and never come to an end.

Because of the greyish tones used, the painting seems to have a depressing aura. When looking at the painting I get the sense of loneliness and sadness. Because the painting seems to be painted during the time of a storm, and when people usually think of a storm they think of pessimism and gloominess, therefore the painting gives me a feeling of pessimism and gloominess.

Overall I personally do not like this painting. I do not like things which give off a negative aura and make me feel glum. I find the painting to dull for my liking; however, I like how Monet reproduced the painting so that it almost looked more like a photo as opposed to a painting. Unless you are within a foot of the painting, you could almost be convinced that it is a photograph. I think Monet is extremely talented and I like his style, however I do not personally like this painting.
